Who’s Minding the Store?

I read a distressing article (courtesy the AP wire) in today’s Houston Chronicle. It seems that two laptops are missing from the military command center coordinating the war in Afghanistan, one of which contains classified information. The computers apparently disappeared last Thursday — and we’re just now hearing about it? Oh, great! Braincell — er, General — Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that it was too soon to say whether the computers were stolen or simply missing. He reassured the assembled press thusly: “The good news is that they were in a single room that is tightly controlled.” Yeah, it sure was. The fucking laptops are gone. Just how tight is this control? As tight as my panty girdle?

The article went on to say that a recently issued government audit indicates that the Justice Department “lost” 400 computers last year alone (I’m no math whiz, but that’s more than one a day!)! Most belonged to the FBI and the INS. (The Immigration and Naturalization Service, Acidman, not your plant’s technology resources department!) Guess the feds haven’t thought to check around on e-Bay for the missing computer equipment.

Good grief!
