When the Going Gets Tough…

The tough go shopping. In a few hours, Robert and I are going out to buy a new computer (just the “tank,” keyboard and mouse; I already have a 22-inch LaCie Electron Blue monitor that I bought last year that I’m totally in love with!), and a new television for the spare bedroom. We have our eye on a 32-inch Sony WEGA. The trick will be whether we feel like taking it home with us and grunting it into the house or whether we’ll pay the extra $40-50 to have it delivered and placed exactly where we want it.

Robert is in charge of picking out the TV; I of course am in charge of the new ‘puta. I have no idea what’s even out there so I won’t know what I want until I see it. I cringe, thought, because I know that whatever I get, it will more than likely have the dreaded and despised (by me anyway) Windows XP OS already loaded on there. Stubborn chicky that I am, I’ll probably try to find a way to load Windows98 on it. We’ll just have to see how it behaves. But my next-door neighbor has a Dell that is about a year old and it has Windows XP on it. What little I’ve used of it I absolutely loathe.

The old computer (the one I’m using now!) is getting pretty long in the tooth. It’s got an AMD K-6 550MHz processor, with a total of 256K RAM, and a puny 10GB hard drive. It has a CD burner and I added an Iomega ATAPI Zip drive and an Exabyte Eagle TR4 4/8GB tape drive. I may go ahead and yank those out and put them in the new computer, depending on what it already comes with.

Then I’ll probably sell the old computer to a cabbie friend of Robert’s for… $100 without the Zip and the Tape drive; $200 if they stay in. I hope that’s not too much of a gouge. I don’t think it is. I’m throwing in my old HP Laserjet 4L too, so he’s getting a printer with his purchase. All he needs is a monitor.

Getting my data from point A to point B is already solved. I’ve got a parallel data cable and DCC. So it’s just a matter of transferring my files (HTML, text, word processing, data backups, MP3s). The proggies will of course have to be reinstalled. Oh what fun!

Will post more after we get back from the store.
