I have been wanting to rent Requiem for a Dream since I read about it at my favorite movie critic’s (James Berardinelli) website. We finally got to watch it this past week. When the movie was over, it was like I’d been socked in the gut. I actually started to sob. Watching the whole thing was like coming upon an accident on the highway. It looks bad, you know it’s bad, you tell yourself you won’t look, but you LOOK ANYWAY. Still, I recommend it highly. And in fact, it depicts the downward spiral of addiction so thoroughly and unromantically that I personally think it should be shown in every high school and middle school in the country. There is no more clear a deterrent to drug use than this movie. Give it a watch. But get your Kleenex ready.
