Love Is in the Air, Day 7

heart border

Still stuck in the 70s, but going back even further, is today’s love song, Tupelo Honey [link to MP3 removed by request] by Van Morrison. There are some interesting hidden or lost lyrics noted below.

You can take all the tea in china
Put it in a big brown bag for me
Sail right around the seven oceans
Drop it straight into the deep blue sea

[chorus]
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Shes an angel of the first degree
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like honey from the bee

You cant stop us on the road to freedom
You cant keep us cause our eyes can see
Men with insight, men in granite
Knights in armor bent on chivalry

[Repeat chrous]

You cant stop us on the road to freedom
You cant stop us cause our eyes can see
Men with insight, men in granite
Knights in armor intent on chivalry

You know shes alright
You know shes alright with me
Shes alright, shes alright (shes an angel)

You can take all the tea in china
Put it in a big brown bag for me
Sail it right around the seven oceans
Drop it smack dab in the middle of the deep blue sea

[Repeat chorus]

A posting to the van mailing list in May 1996 notes the existence of a lost verse to this song, here transcribed from a performance on the van morrison in ireland concert video:

Theres a rose pressed inside a bible
That she reads on the balcony
Shes sweet in slumber and Ive got her number
For the beginning of the century.

Van list member art siegel comments in November 1997 that he doesn’t think the rose in the Bible is a true lost verse, but rather one that van added to his live performances years after the origin, and provides a true lost verse which is in the original sheet music:

Ill tell a tale of old manhattan
Adirondack bus to go
Standing waiting on my number
And my numbers gonna show.

The dusty springfield cover version on the van morrison songbook cd has a variant of this:

I heard a tale of old manhattan
Ive never been there but I want to go
Standing waiting on my number
And my numbers gonna show.

  1. Joni – these are great!! Love them both!! If you stay in the 70’s will we see any Bread – they are one of my favorite bands from that time – also love Pat Benatar – makes me want to put on my leggins, spray my hair all up and dance!!!

  3. The file isn’t “pirated.” I ripped it from a CD which I purchased. So .. whatever you want to call it .. it’s been removed. Happy now?

  4. Hey I checked out this guys lame website, his logo a like a stupid Texas Ranger badge. He talks about all the international companies he works for and he is sending you a threatening email for having a Van Morrison song on your blog, I’ll bet Vans record company can sleep good. Don’t know what this jerk gets paid but if it’s over a $1.50 it’s too much.

    Peace
